Understanding Jeep 4WD Systems
Command-Trac (NP231)
The simplest Jeep 4WD system. 2H, 4H, and 4L modes — you shift manually between 2WD and 4WD. Cannot be used on dry tarmac in 4WD (no centre differential). Found on base Wrangler TJ and Cherokee XJ models. The most affordable transfer case to replace.
R4,500 – R8,000
Rock-Trac (NV241OR)
The Rubicon-exclusive transfer case with a 4:1 low range ratio — double the crawl ratio of standard units. Essential for serious rock crawling. Combined with Dana 44 axles and electronic lockers, it gives the Rubicon its legendary off-road capability. Highly sought-after for upgrades.
R15,000 – R25,000
Quadra-Trac II (NV245)
Grand Cherokee's full-time AWD system with automatic torque biasing and a 2-speed low range. No driver input needed — the system distributes power automatically. Electronic limited-slip transfers torque to the wheel with most grip. Available with Quadra-Drive II for maximum off-road ability.
R8,000 – R12,000
Choosing the Right Transfer Case Fluid and Service Interval
More Jeep transfer cases die from neglect than from abuse. The single biggest mistake SA owners make is trusting the "lifetime fluid" marketing on MP-series units fitted to the Grand Cherokee WK2, Cherokee KL, and late-model Wrangler JL — lifetime is the life of the warranty, not the life of the gearset. Shear-degraded fluid loads up the chain, the mode-shift clutch pack and the internal pump, and a unit that should last 250,000 km starts chewing itself at half that.
The correct fluid matters. The NP231, NP242, NV241, NV241OR (Rock-Trac), and NV245 Quadra-Trac II all take Mopar ATF+4 — any reputable ATF+4 (MS-9602 spec) is a straight swap. The newer MP3022 and MP1522 electronic units on the WK2 and Cherokee KL require Mopar MS-10835 transfer case fluid — a semi-synthetic formulated specifically for the magnetic clutch and solenoid control. Using ATF+4 in an MP3022 will cause "Service 4WD" warnings within a few thousand kilometres as the clutch pack glazes. Always verify against the sticker inside the case or your owner's manual before filling.
Service interval reality on South African roads: change the fluid every 60,000 km, or every 30,000 km if you tow, do dusty gravel, or wade regularly. Fresh ATF+4 is straw-coloured; if what comes out is dark brown, smells burnt, or has glitter in it, the clutch pack is already wearing. Catching this early is the difference between a R500 fluid change and a R15,000 transfer case replacement. Chain stretch, gear whine on deceleration, and a "shudder" when shifting from 2H to 4H Full-Time are all symptoms of fluid that was left in too long.
While you have the vehicle on a hoist for the transfer case service, it is worth inspecting the differentials at both ends — they run the same kind of thermal cycle, and a leaking pinion seal that spills onto the transfer case output flange will contaminate your fresh fluid in weeks. One service session, one set of gaskets, one invoice from your mechanic — far better than three separate jobs.

Buying a Replacement Jeep Transfer Case in South Africa
The transfer case is arguably the most "Jeep" component in the entire drivetrain. It's what splits power between the front and rear axles and gives your Jeep its legendary 4x4 capability. Whether your Wrangler JL's transfer case is grinding on shifts or your Grand Cherokee WK2's Quadra-Trac is leaking fluid, we can source a quality replacement.
For Wrangler JK owners looking to upgrade, swapping from a standard Selec-Trac to a Rock-Trac (NV241OR) with its 4:1 low range is one of the best modifications you can make — especially if you're already running larger tyres and re-geared differentials. If you're weighing up which 4WD system actually suits your driving, our breakdown of Command-Trac vs Rock-Trac vs Quadra-Trac explained walks through the trade-offs.
