Jeep uses half a dozen different 4x4 trade names across the Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Cherokee and Renegade ranges, and most customers we speak to at our Pretoria workshop cannot tell you the difference. The name matters: it tells you the transfer case, the low-range ratio, and whether the system is built for gravel-road peace of mind or proper 4:1 rock crawling 12.

Quick decision framework: a Wrangler Sport/Sahara runs Command-Trac with a 2.72:1 low range 13, a Wrangler Rubicon runs Rock-Trac with a 4:1 low and lockers 24, a Grand Cherokee Laredo runs Quadra-Trac I (single-speed AWD, no low range) 56, a Limited runs Quadra-Trac II (two-speed, 2.72:1 low) 57, and an Overland or SRT adds an electronic limited-slip rear diff to become Quadra-Drive II 58. The Cherokee KL and Renegade use the transverse Active Drive family — a different animal entirely 910.

Command-Trac (NP231 / NV231)

Command-Trac is the workhorse. Every non-Rubicon Wrangler from the YJ to the current JL runs a version of the NP231 (later NV231), and the same unit served the XJ Cherokee, TJ and KJ Liberty 13. It is a chain-driven, aluminium-cased, part-time box: 2H, N, 4H, 4L, with a 2.72:1 low range 13.

The important word is part-time — it mechanically locks the front and rear output shafts together in 4H, so you cannot leave it in 4WD on dry tarmac without winding up the driveline 3. Shift-on-the-fly works up to roughly 88 km/h 3. Chains stretch around 250,000 – 320,000 km 13, and rebuilds are cheap through our transfer case department.

Rock-Trac (NV241OR)

Rock-Trac is what you pay the Rubicon premium for. Introduced on the 2003 TJ and carried through to the current Wrangler JL, it is the heavy-duty brother of the NP231 24. Thicker input shaft and planetary, a fixed rear yoke, and around 42 kg versus ~32 kg for the NP231 2.

The headline is a 4.0:1 planetary low range versus 2.72:1 on Command-Trac 24. Combine that with the Rubicon’s 4.10 axles, Tru-Lok front and rear lockers and a manual first gear and you get a crawl ratio near 84:1 that lets a JL walk up rock steps at idle 4. For district roads Command-Trac will do; for Cederberg or Baviaanskloof rock work, the 4:1 and factory lockers are worth every rand.

Selec-Trac (NP242)

Selec-Trac was Jeep’s clever hybrid before full-time AWD became the norm. The NP242 debuted in 1987 on the XJ Cherokee and was optional on the ZJ Grand Cherokee and KJ Liberty 1114. It offers 2H / 4H Part-Time / 4H Full-Time / N / 4L with the same 2.72:1 low as Command-Trac 141. The 4H Full-Time mode uses a centre diff with a viscous coupling so you can run it on dry tarmac without binding 1415. The idea lives on as Selec-Trac in the new Grand Cherokee WL and as “Auto” mode on newer cases 16.

Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II

The Grand Cherokee uses a three-tier 4x4 hierarchy that tracks trim level almost perfectly 5. If you are shopping a used Grand Cherokee WK2, memorise this ladder:

Quadra-Trac I (NV140) is the base Laredo system — single-speed, chain-driven, full-time AWD with a fixed 48% front / 52% rear torque split 56. No 4-Low, no neutral, no driver input required. Great for Jo’burg school runs and the N1 in the rain, but not suitable for technical off-road 6.

Quadra-Trac II (NV245) is standard on Grand Cherokee Limited from 2005 onward 57. Same 48/52 default split, but it adds a 2.72:1 low range, a neutral position, and an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch that can progressively lock the centre diff from 0% to 100% under slip 7.

Quadra-Drive II is Quadra-Trac II plus an Eaton electronic limited-slip differential (ELSD) in the rear axle (and, on earlier units to 2010, also the front) 816. The ELSD uses a hydraulic pump and solenoid to clamp a clutch pack, giving near-locker performance without the NVH penalty of a mechanical locker 8. Standard on Overland, Summit and SRT 58. Active Drive Systems (Cherokee KL, Renegade, Compass)

The Cherokee KL (2014–2023), Renegade and Compass are FWD-based platforms with transverse engines, a Power Transfer Unit (PTU) to the rear, and a rear drive module that disconnects for fuel economy 91017.

  • Active Drive I — single-speed, on-demand AWD. No low range 917.
  • Active Drive II — adds a 2.92:1 PTU low-range reduction for a 56:1 crawl ratio (4-cyl auto) 912.
  • Active Drive Lock — Active Drive II plus a mechanical locking rear differential and Rock mode. Standard on Cherokee KL Trailhawk 912.

All three use a rear-axle disconnect — a magnetic clutch decouples the rear driveshaft when AWD isn’t needed 1017. A Trailhawk with Active Drive Lock is genuinely capable, even if it can’t match a Rubicon’s articulation.

Maintenance and Failure Points

Three failure modes show up across all these systems:

Chain stretch. NP231, NV241OR and NV245 are all chain-driven. Symptoms: metallic rattle under load, clunks on throttle lift-off in 4H, eventually tooth-skip 1318. On the NV245, mis-matched tyre sizes accelerate it — never replace only two tyres on a Quadra-Trac II 18. Seal leaks. Rear output, front output and shift-selector shaft seals are the usual suspects 13. A R800 seal leak becomes a R22,000 rebuild when the bearings run dry.

Shift motor / encoder. Electric-shift boxes (dial or button) suffer dead shift motors, corroded connectors or failed encoders — seen as a flashing 4WD indicator.

Fluid. Nearly every Jeep transfer case takes MOPAR ATF+4 to spec MS-9602 1920. Change it every 50,000 – 60,000 km regardless of any “fill for life” claim. A rebuild is 40 – 60% of the cost of a used replacement if the case is sound; cracked cases or chewed Rock-Trac planetaries mean it is time to replace from our transfer case stock.

Can I swap a Rock-Trac into my Sahara? Mechanically yes, with the right adapter and front driveshaft, plus matching 4.10 axles with lockers to benefit. A proper 4:1 swap runs R60,000 – R100,000 installed.

Is the Rubicon worth the premium over a Sahara? If you rock-crawl or tow off-road, yes — the 4:1 low, Dana 44 axles, lockers and sway-bar disconnect cost more to retrofit than the trim difference.

Do Active Drive systems work off-road? Active Drive I and II are for snow, rain and light trail. Active Drive Lock with its rear locker and 56:1 crawl will clear the average SA 4x4 trail — ground clearance stops you before the drivetrain does.

Can I use Quadra-Trac I on gravel passes? Yes, it’s full-time AWD — nothing to engage. The limitation is no low range; steep descents rely on Hill Descent Control and engine braking.

What fluid does my transfer case take? For NV231, NV241OR, NP242, NV140 and NV245: MOPAR ATF+4 to MS-9602 1920. Do not substitute generic Dexron — different friction modifier, you will get shudder.

When should I use 4H versus 4L? 4H is for traction at normal driving speeds — wet tarmac (full-time systems only), gravel district roads, slippery dirt, light sand. You can run it up to about 88 km/h on Command-Trac and full-time on Selec-Trac or Quadra-Trac. 4L is for slow technical work where you need torque and engine braking — rocky climbs, steep descents, deep mud, heavy towing on a slippery launch. Engage 4L stationary, in neutral, with the clutch in on a manual. Anything above roughly 40 km/h is too fast for low range and you’ll cook bearings.

Can I drive my Wrangler in 4WD all the time? On a part-time Command-Trac or Rock-Trac, no — only on loose or slippery surfaces. On dry tarmac the front and rear axles want to rotate at different rates through corners and the locked transfer case forces them to bind. You’ll hear chirping tyres, feel the steering fight back, and over time you’ll cook the transfer case chain and U-joints. Full-time systems like Selec-Trac 4H Auto, Quadra-Trac I and Quadra-Trac II are different — they have a centre differential or clutch pack and are designed to stay engaged on tar all year round.

What do 2H, 4H, N and 4L mean on the transfer case lever? 2H is two-wheel-drive high range — rear-wheel drive only, for everyday road use, best fuel economy. 4H is four-wheel-drive high range — front and rear axles driven at normal gearing, for slippery roads and moderate off-road. N is neutral — disconnects the transfer case from the gearbox, used for flat-towing behind a motorhome (Wranglers are popular dinghies for this exact reason). 4L is four-wheel-drive low range — multiplies torque by 2.72 (Command-Trac) or 4.0 (Rock-Trac) for crawling, towing recoveries and steep terrain.

Why does the transfer case have a neutral position? N disconnects the gearbox output from both axles entirely, so the wheels can roll freely with no driveline drag. The main reason is flat-towing — hitching a Wrangler behind a motorhome on all four wheels without spinning the gearbox or transfer case internals. Some 4x4 recovery scenarios also use it: dyno runs, axle swaps, or freeing a stuck vehicle by pushing it out without the engine fighting back. Never select N while the vehicle is moving on a hill — there’s no engine braking and no parking pawl holding the case.

How fast can I shift into 4H on the fly? On a Command-Trac NV231 you can shift between 2H and 4H at up to roughly 88 km/h (about 55 mph), but the gentler the better — ease off the throttle, click the lever, and hold straight wheels for a second. Rock-Trac is the same physical case so the same limit applies. To shift into or out of 4L on any of these you must stop, put the gearbox in neutral, depress the clutch on a manual, then move the lever. Full-time cases (Quadra-Trac, Selec-Trac in Auto mode) need no driver input at all to switch between 2WD and AWD.
