Cylinder Heads by Engine Code
Looking by engine code or platform? Here's the quick map from Jeep model to the cylinder head that fits — petrol and diesel.
- Wrangler JL / Gladiator JT — Pentastar 3.6L V6: revised post-2012 casting (RL141353AC), left or right bank. Not subject to the early JK cracking defect.
- Wrangler JL / Grand Cherokee WL — 2.0L Turbo I4 (GME-T4): single DOHC head, MultiAir, twin-scroll. Often replaced after oil-starvation or coolant-loss damage.
- Wrangler JK / Grand Cherokee WK2 (early) — Pentastar 3.6L V6: pre-Aug-2012 left head is the known cracking head — see the section below.
- Wrangler JK / Cherokee KJ / KK — 2.8L CRD (ENS / ENR / RWG codes): single inline-4 head, prone to warping from overheating. Used and recon stocked.
- Grand Cherokee WK2 — 3.0L CRD V6 (EXL / VM Motori): shared OM642-platform head, left or right bank. EGR and carbon damage common.
- Cherokee KL / Compass / Renegade — 2.4L Tigershark or 3.2L Pentastar V6: Tigershark is a single I4 head; 3.2L mirrors the 3.6L architecture.
- Grand Cherokee WK / WK2 — 5.7L HEMI V8 or 4.7L PowerTech V8: left or right bank, specify which side when enquiring.
Pentastar 3.6L Cracked Cylinder Head — We Can Help
Early-build Pentastar 3.6L V6 engines (Grand Cherokee WK2 and Wrangler JK, built on or before 25 July 2012) have a known valve-seat defect on the left cylinder head — Bank 2, cylinders 2, 4 and 6. Symptoms include a cylinder-2 misfire (P0302), ticking from the left bank, rough idle and slow coolant loss with no visible leak. Read the full diagnostic guide →
We stock replacement left heads for the 3.6L Pentastar — both used (revised post-August-2012 RL141353AC castings) and reconditioned. Wrangler JL and Gladiator JT engines run the revised head from the factory and are not subject to this defect.
Buying a Replacement Jeep Cylinder Head in South Africa
Cylinder head failure is one of the most expensive engine repairs, but replacing just the head is far cheaper than a complete engine replacement. The Grand Cherokee WK2 and Wrangler JK are the most commonly affected models, with the Pentastar 3.6L cracking issue and the 2.8L CRD warping problem driving consistent demand. For a full diagnostic walkthrough — Pentastar cracked cylinder head — symptoms and repair cost — read our deep-dive on what to look for before booking the job.
For V6 and V8 engines, you need to specify which bank (left or right) when ordering. The left head sits on bank 1 (cylinders 1-3 on V6, 1-3-5-7 on V8) and is the side that cracks on early Pentastar engines. The right head sits on bank 2.
We also supply head gasket sets, head bolts, and valve components if your mechanic is reconditioning the existing head. Browse our full engine parts catalogue for individual components, or check turbochargers if you're fixing a diesel Jeep.
