Jeep Cherokee KL Temperature Sensors

You'll notice erratic temperature gauge readings, hard starting when cold, poor fuel economy, and often a check engine light with codes P0115-P0118. On the 3.6L Pentastar, a failed sensor can cause rough idling and cooling fans running continuously. Replacement sensors cost R350-R850 depending on Wrangler generation (JK vs JL).

Most Grand Cherokee models have two sensors: the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor that monitors coolant temp for the ECU, and a separate sensor for the dashboard gauge. The WK2 with 3.6L Pentastar also has cylinder head temperature sensors. Expect to pay R400-R950 per sensor.

Not advisable—a faulty sensor can cause the ECU to run incorrect fuel maps, leading to actual overheating or engine damage. If your Cherokee or Wrangler shows temperature warnings, stop driving and have it checked immediately. Continuing to drive risks warping the cylinder head, especially on aluminum block engines like the 3.6L Pentastar.

Fluctuating readings usually indicate a failing temperature sensor, air pockets in the cooling system, or a sticking thermostat. On Wrangler JK models, this is often caused by corroded sensor connectors exposed to water crossings. Test the sensor with a multimeter (resistance should change smoothly with temperature) or replace it for R400-R750.

Use a multimeter to check resistance: at 20°C it should read around 2,500 ohms, dropping to 300 ohms at 80°C for most Jeep sensors. Compare actual coolant temperature (infrared thermometer) with sensor readings using a scan tool. If readings don't match or sensor resistance is erratic, replace it—testing takes 15 minutes and can save you from misdiagnosing thermostats or radiators.
