Fuel tank replacement for a Wrangler JL or Grand Cherokee WK2 typically costs R8,500-R14,000 including the tank and labour at a Johannesburg or Cape Town workshop. Older Wrangler TJ steel tanks run R4,500-R7,500, while plastic tanks for newer models (JL, Cherokee KL) are more expensive due to integrated fuel pumps and emission components. Add another R1,200-R2,500 if rust damage requires hanger strap or skid plate replacement.

Small pinholes or hairline cracks in steel tanks (Wrangler TJ, Cherokee XJ) can sometimes be repaired with epoxy fuel tank repair kits (R350-R600), but this is a temporary fix not recommended for daily drivers. Plastic tanks on Wrangler JL, Grand Cherokee WK2, and Cherokee KL cannot be reliably repaired—any crack or puncture requires full replacement due to safety regulations and fuel vapour emission standards.

Grand Cherokee WK2 with the 3.6L Pentastar runs an 85L tank, while Cherokee KL has a 60L capacity—adequate for Johannesburg to Durban highway runs but limiting for remote Karoo or Kruger trips without planning fuel stops.

Steel fuel tanks on older Wranglers (TJ/YJ) and Cherokee XJ models rust from coastal salt air in Durban or road salt, plus condensation from fluctuating highveld temperatures in Gauteng. Aftermarket skid plates (R1,800-R3,200) protect against rock strikes, while keeping the tank full minimizes condensation—older Jeeps benefit from annual undercoating with rust inhibitor spray (R450-R850 professional application).

The fuel tank assembly includes the tank itself, fuel pump module (sending unit for gauge reading), filler neck and hose, vapour vent lines for emissions, and mounting straps or skid plate. Wrangler JL and Grand Cherokee models integrate the fuel pump, level sensor, and pressure regulator into one module inside the tank—replacing the entire assembly costs R6,500-R9,500 versus R12,000+ for the full tank and pump together.
