While a Jeep will run without a catalytic converter, it's illegal in South Africa under the National Environmental Management Air Quality Act and will fail roadworthy inspection. Off-road-only vehicles on private property are the sole exception.

Common causes include oil consumption from worn piston rings (common in high-mileage 3.6L Pentastar engines), unburned fuel from misfires coating the catalyst, and physical damage from rock strikes during off-roading. Poor quality South African fuel, carbon buildup in direct-injection 2.0L Turbo engines, and coolant leaks from head gasket failures can also contaminate and destroy the catalyst substrate prematurely.

Mildly clogged converters can sometimes be cleaned using specialized catalytic converter cleaner additives (R250-R450) added to your fuel tank, though results vary. Severely clogged or damaged converters on Wranglers and Grand Cherokees require replacement—attempting to hollow out or remove the catalyst is illegal and will cause engine management issues. If your Jeep shows P0420 codes, diagnostics should confirm whether it's truly the converter or just faulty oxygen sensors (R850-R1,400 each).
