The fan relay or wiring harness can also fail, especially on higher-mileage Wranglers driven in dusty South African conditions.

Only for very short distances at highway speeds where airflow cools the radiator naturally—never in traffic or at idle. Replace the fan immediately to avoid catastrophic engine damage.

Electric fans are more efficient but have more electrical components that can fail.

Electric fan assemblies for Wrangler JL or Grand Cherokee WK2 range from R3,200-R6,500 depending on single or dual-fan setups, plus R800-R1,500 labour. Mechanical fan clutches for older models like Wrangler TJ or Grand Cherokee WJ cost R1,800-R3,200, with simpler installation. Always use quality parts as cheap fans fail quickly in South African heat.

This usually indicates a stuck fan relay, a failed coolant temperature sensor sending false readings, or a short in the fan control circuit. On Grand Cherokee WK2 models with the 3.6L Pentastar, the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) can develop faults causing constant fan operation (R12,000-R18,000 to replace). Diagnose with a scan tool before replacing expensive components.
