You can drive short distances, but it's risky—exhaust fumes containing carbon monoxide can enter the cabin through the ventilation system, causing headaches or worse. On Wrangler JK/JL models, a leaking manifold gasket also causes incorrect oxygen sensor readings, triggering limp mode and potentially damaging the catalytic converter (R8,000-R15,000 to replace). Get it fixed within a few days.

Listen for a rhythmic ticking noise from the engine that matches RPM, especially on the 3.6L Pentastar V6 in Grand Cherokee or Gladiator models—this indicates a manifold gasket leak. You'll also smell exhaust fumes, see black carbon streaks on the manifold, or notice the engine running rough due to air being sucked into the exhaust system.

A V6 Pentastar (Wrangler, Grand Cherokee) has two manifold gaskets—one per cylinder bank—plus 2-4 flange gaskets connecting downpipes, catalytic converters, and muffler sections. The 4.0L inline-six in Cherokee XJ or Wrangler TJ has one manifold gasket and typically three pipe flange gaskets in the complete exhaust system.

Heat cycling from stop-start Johannesburg traffic, corrosion from coastal salt air in Durban and Cape Town, and vibration from off-road use or potholed roads cause gasket material to compress and crack over time.
